Ghana’s disappointment is Africa’s heartbreak. The hopes of a continent are crushed and it seems that no amount of reflection and resolve can bring Africa to terms with the magnitude of the injustice the Black Stars suffer at the hands of Senor Suarez. The sight of his colluding teammates effortlessly lifting him on shoulders that carry no guilt or sense of shame is maddening.
Where is the light in that dark hour? How can grieving Africa find a spark in the heartlessness of those bleak moments?
Perhaps there is a way to harness that spirit of unity that loses its collective breath as that Jabulani collides so callously with that crossbar. Maybe by shouting “no,” in chorus 700 million voices strong, the people can resist the fear that pits brother against brother. Maybe the simple act of remembering how it feels to passionately support eleven men on a football field is enough to obliterate racism, expel Xenophobia and move a continent, fueled by a common purpose, boldly into a future with neither victims nor perpetrators. Viva Africa!
